March 7, 2017

Dear Parents,

Though I love seeing Willard families walking to school, I need your help in reminding students to be respectful of the personal property of our neighbors. It has come to my attention that some students are running through the yards along Morningside and walking on stone walls lining nearby properties. Some children are even approaching pets sitting in the yard. These behaviors are not only unsafe, but they are invasive to our neighbors.

While I'm on the subject of safety, please continue to remind each other to walk on the school side of Morningside. Lots of trucks continue to come out onto the sidewalk by the house construction across the street. These trucks are big and loud and cannot clearly see our children passing by!

Thank you for taking a moment to speak to your child about these matters.

Warmly,

Mrs. Hoffman

Important Announcement from Mrs. Hoffman:

With the construction on Morningside, we are seeing more and more construction trucks while students are traveling to school. Sometimes these trucks back up into the sidewalk! For the time being, please avoid the side of the street with construction and instead walk on the Willard School side. Please do not allow children to walk alone near the construction site, as the trucks cannot see or hear the kids walking.  Thank you for helping to keep all children safe!

Important Announcements from Mrs. Hoffman:

Valentine's Day

In celebration of Valentine's Day, students are welcome to distribute valentines to their classmates on February 14th. Please, however, do not send any food or candy in with the valentines.  Any food items that come to school will be sent home. If you feel it necessary to give something extra, consider pencils, stickers, erasers, tattoos, etc. Please see your classroom teacher with any questions. Thank you!

A Challenge for PARENTS!

If you attended last week's Well-Being program, "The Power of Failure," this suggestion will come as no surprise to you. Parents, in order to foster independence and problem solving in our students, I urge you to stop dropping off forgotten water bottles and homework assignments. Be strong, and support your children in learning these life-long skills!  If you are interested in more information about "The Power of Failure" and author Jessica Lahey, I encourage you to check out the website:http://www.jessicalahey.com/the-gift-of-failure/

One School, One Book

I hope you are enjoying Kenny and the Dragon. Please email me a picture of your family reading together! For more information one One School, One Book, please go to https://goo.gl/k5ZjJG.

Dress for the Weather

What a strange winter! With this inconsistent weather, please make sure students are dressed appropriately. We will attempt to go outside as much as possible.

When Your Child is Absent...

Please call the absence verification number 201.670.9232 before 9:00AM.

Thank you!

Important Announcements from Mrs. Hoffman

Thank you!

You are Invited...

I have been consistently impressed by the Well-Being Series offered by RPS. If you have not attended a program, tomorrow is your chance! February 1st at 7:00 PM at GWMS, author Jessica Lahey’s will present her program, “The Gift of Failure."  Ms. Lahey is author of the bestselling book The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed. A writer and teacher on education, parenting and child welfare, Ms. Lahey’s work appears in several publications, including The New York Times and The Atlantic. This program will address what we have been discussing at Willard - the importance of the growth mindset and the need for students to struggle to be successful in life. I hope to see many Willard parents at this event!

Trading Cards

Please remind your child to keep all Pokemon and sports cards at home. They are not permitted in school. Thank you!
